You May Still Have a Path to Complete RTD
An eligible driver who does not currently have an employer or prospective employer may be able to use the FMCSA Clearinghouse process that allows a designated C/TPA to assist for the limited purpose of completing the Return-to-Duty process.
BUnited Services can assist eligible drivers with the applicable Clearinghouse steps and coordinate the Return-to-Duty test.

Your RTD Test Does Not End Follow-Up Testing
Your SAP may prescribe additional follow-up testing after you return to DOT safety-sensitive duties.
If You Work for a Motor Carrier
If you return to DOT safety-sensitive work as an employee, your employer is responsible for ensuring that your SAP-prescribed follow-up testing plan is administered.
If follow-up testing is still required, your current or future employer will need to continue those requirements while you perform safety-sensitive functions for that employer.
If You're a Self-Employed Owner-Operator
A self-employed owner-operator subject to FMCSA drug and alcohol testing requirements must use a designated C/TPA for the applicable Return-to-Duty and follow-up testing functions.
BUnited Services can continue helping you. If BUnited Services is your designated C/TPA, we can coordinate your required follow-up testing and assist with applicable Clearinghouse reporting.
How Many Follow-Up Tests Are Required?
Your SAP determines your specific follow-up testing plan.
DOT regulations require at least six directly observed follow-up tests during the first 12 months after returning to safety-sensitive duties.
Your SAP may require follow-up testing for a period of up to five years.
Important — Know What's Included Before You Purchase
The $434 RTD package covers BUnited Services' initial Return-to-Duty service, including the DOT RTD drug test, RTD compliance setup and tracking, applicable Clearinghouse setup assistance, test coordination, and applicable RTD result reporting.
SAP evaluation, education, treatment, and SAP-prescribed follow-up tests are not included in the $434 RTD package.
Additional testing fees apply when future follow-up tests are required.
Completing the Return-to-Duty process does not guarantee employment. Individual motor carriers make their own hiring decisions.
Return-to-Duty FAQs
Can I complete RTD if I don't currently have a job?
Eligible drivers without a current or prospective employer may be able to use the applicable FMCSA Clearinghouse process involving a designated C/TPA. BUnited Services can assist eligible drivers with the applicable RTD steps.
Do I need my own USDOT or MC number?
You should not obtain a USDOT number solely for the limited-purpose Return-to-Duty pathway. Operating your own motor carrier business is separate and may involve additional FMCSA registration requirements.
Can I purchase before finishing my SAP requirements?
No. Complete the requirements prescribed by your SAP and wait until your SAP determines that you are eligible for Return-to-Duty testing.
What happens after I pass my RTD test?
After the applicable negative RTD result is reported, you may return to DOT safety-sensitive functions when otherwise authorized to do so. Any SAP-prescribed follow-up testing requirements must still be completed.
Who handles my follow-up tests if I get a job?
When you perform DOT safety-sensitive work for a motor carrier, that employer is responsible for administering the applicable SAP-prescribed follow-up testing plan.
What if I'm a self-employed owner-operator?
Owner-operators subject to FMCSA drug and alcohol testing requirements use a designated C/TPA for the applicable RTD and follow-up testing functions. BUnited Services can provide this ongoing support when designated as your C/TPA.
Are follow-up tests included in the $434 package?
No. The $434 price covers the initial Return-to-Duty package. SAP-prescribed follow-up testing is separate, and additional testing fees apply.
Does completing RTD guarantee that I will get a job?
No. Completing the applicable Return-to-Duty requirements does not guarantee employment. Individual employers make their own hiring decisions.
